The Earth, Our Mother is Billy Gauthier’s largest sculpture to date, carved from a fin whale skull and weighing over 600 lbs. Prior to its creation at the 2023 Bonavista Biennale, the skull sat outdoors for 40 years and became a site of insect colonies.

Hear The Rooms Conservator, Miki Lee, discuss the processes and challenges of conserving this complex artwork to prepare it for exhibition.

Tickets: $12 (plus HST). Free for Rooms Members. Includes admission to the exhibitions and a coffee from The Rooms Café.

Billy Gauthier (b. 1978, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL) is an artist and activist of Inuit and Métis ancestry currently residing in North West River, Labrador.

His sculptures have narrative qualities that are inspired by personal memories, Inuit cosmologies, and mutual respect for the land and its natural resources. He has received many accolades for his work, including being named Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council (NLAC) Emerging Artist of the Year in 2011.
