A special presentation of the acclaimed, powerful documentary film, Inendi followed by a guest appearance Q&A with its director, Sarain Fox.

Broadcaster, activist and filmmaker Sarain Fox was nominated for a Canadian Screen Award for this 2020 film.

“With a pandemic threatening to take our elders, Sarain Fox gathers stories from her auntie and matriarch, Mary Bell, who holds the family’s history: the legacy, the trauma, the truth.”

This event is presented in collaboration with The Northern Film Initiative.

Inuit Elder Zippie Nochasak will begin the evening with a traditional Qulliq lighting ceremony. Ashley Dicker and Sophie Agnatok will be present to perform Inuit throat singing and drum dancing.

Local filmmaker and actor Elizabeth Hicks will lead a thought-provoking Q&A session with Sarain Fox following the 44-minute screening. A truly unique opportunity to meet this amazing, multi-talented, contemporary Indigenous storyteller.

About Sarain Fox:

Sarain is Anishinaabe from Batchawana First Nation, just outside of Sault Sainte Marie, Ontario. 

She is passionate about empowering Indigenous communities and amplifying their voices, especially those of the youth. She is a multifaceted artist and activist who comes from a long line of storytellers. As a result, Sarain has become a powerful and vibrant voice for the Indigenous community.

She is a dancer, choreographer, stylist, activist, brand ambassador, television host and content producer. A storyteller at heart, Sarain has combined these various mediums to create a compelling social platform for amplifying the voices of her people. She uses her platform to celebrate the immense knowledge and talent of Indigenous people, designers and brands.

Sarain’s screen highlights include the award-winning series, RISE (Viceland), Cut-off (Viceland) and APTN’s Future History. Her ability to dive into challenging social and cultural topics has gained Sarain an audience that is as diverse as it is engaged. She reaches folks across North America and beyond, who share her vision for creating meaningful dialogue about Indigenous resilience and resistance.

In fashion, Sarain has lent her voice to international brands such as Sephora, Canada Goose, Nike N7 and Manitobah Mukluks. She sees each partnership and campaign as an opportunity to highlight her culture in the mainstream, share the stage with up-and-coming Indigenous talent and change the world for her people.

Sarain has trained at some of the most highly acclaimed faculties such as Quinte Ballet School, The Canadian Children’s Dance Theatre and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre.

Sarain has starred in music videos and on stage with artists such as Buffy Saint Marie, Digging Roots, A Tribe Called Red, Once a Tree, Kahawaii Dance Theatre (Toronto), Untld. Collective (Australia) and Ajkun Ballet Theatre (NYC).

Sarain was the choreographer and lead in Theatre New Brunswick’s’ The Eighth Fire and premiered her solo work, The Red Road Block, at Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre.

She works extensively with Xara Choral Theatre on works such as Fatty Legsand, most recently, Rings Through Water.

Sarain uses various mediums and social platforms to prove that Indigenous representation matters…and is desired!

Join us for a delightful morning at The Rooms!
Bring your little ones to our enchanting Harbour View Room for unguided playtime surrounded by an array of toys and books tailored for infants and toddlers aged 0 to 4.

No prior registration is necessary; simply pay your admission at The Rooms front desk and drop in anytime between 10:30 am and 12:00 pm! Space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Please note that caregivers must accompany their children throughout the session. While our program room can accommodate up to 20 adults with their little ones, if it reaches capacity, we kindly ask caregivers to momentarily step back to make room for others to join in the fun.

The Playdate is included in the cost of admission. Free for Rooms Members.

Workshop

Did you know the forget-me-not flower holds a special meaning in Newfoundland and Labrador? It is a proud symbol of remembrance for The Royal Newfoundland Regiment, particularly those lost at Beaumont-Hamel on July 1, 1916, during the Battle of the Somme.

What to Expect During This Workshop:

  • Tour Level 2 Museum: Beaumont-Hamel and the Trail of the Caribou
  • Embroider a bouquet of forget-me-nots to remember those who served
  • All supplies, including hoops, threads, needles, and fabrics, will be provided

Peoples of Newfoundland and Labrador

Stroll across land and sea, and through time, to meet the peoples who have made Newfoundland and Labrador home for the past 9,000 years.

Each tour is approximately 30 – 40 minutes and is included in the cost of admission. Free for Rooms members.

Sergeant Gander: A Soldier's Soldier – Film Screening and Q&A

US Army Vietnam Veteran JP Bear shares his research and presents a short film honoring Sergeant Gander, a Newfoundland Dog and mascot of the Royal Rifles of Canada during World War II.

Sergeant Gander was a member of “C” Force during the Battle of Hong Kong and died in combat. In 2000, he was posthumously awarded the PDSA Dickin Medal – often called the “animals’ Victoria Cross” – for bravery.

A Q&A will follow the screening of the 11-minute film SGT Gander: A Soldier's Soldier.

Join Newman Sound Choir for its annual Remembrance Day performance, a touching evening of music and reflection generously supported by The Elinor Gill Ratcliffe Foundation.

This cherished tradition offers a time of music and reflection as we honour all those who have served, and continue to serve, in times of conflict.

With special guest tenor Jeffrey Taylor, the concert features moving choral performances and thoughtful words of remembrance that pay tribute to the courage and sacrifice of those who have defended peace and freedom.
