January 6th is Nalujuk Night for some Inuit communities in Labrador. Towns are abuzz on this night, anticipating the arrival of the Nalujuit—particularly terrifying characters are said to come in from the Eastern sea ice. This program will paint a colourful picture of a typical Nalujuk Night.
Our first presenter, artist Jessica Winters, will join us online to discuss her artwork and how the tradition is interpreted in her home of Makkovik. Jessica will offer the audience an insider’s perspective on the custom.
Our second presenter, photographer, filmmaker and researcher, Jennie Williams from Labrador, will deliver an in-person multimedia, first-hand account of contemporary Nalujuk Night. Jennie’s photographs capture all aspects of community life during the high-energy Nalujuk Night experience.
Join us for a discussion with these talented artists as we explore this tradition in the context of art.
This free event is offered in partnership with the Mummers Festival. To attend in person, tickets must be reserved in advance by calling Visitor Services at 757-8090.
This Coffee & Culture event will be presented online via Zoom; to register for the online presentation please visit mummersfestival.ca/the-nalujuit-of-labrador
